Summer Dance lab 2017

with Breanna O'Mara

Artlab J is excited to introduce our new Summer Dance Lab!

Our Summer Dance Lab is a creative laboratory for dancers aged 16+, where dancers will have the opportunity to work closely with an international artist. The lab is a 7 day workshop exploring and learning artistic skills and professional excellence. The first day an audition will be held and the artist will hand select dancers to use in the creative process, ending in a new choreography to be performed at Detroit Dance City Festival. This program aims to guide in-demand dancers ready to advance their careers, receiving constructive feedback and guidance from an experienced successful artist. We hope dancers will foster ingenuity, risk-taking, collaboration and mentorship.

Training will consist of a mix of phrase work and improvisation aimed at opening a deeper understanding of our possibilities, both minuscule and explosive.  We will attack floor work, enhance our connection to space, release into fragility, and sweat.  We will look at how we approach movement, from what are we dancing and why.  This class aims to encourage individuality in the interpretation of movement, allowing the exploration of imagination and inspiration while aiming for specificity and pleasure.

A creation made in collaboration with the dancers.  Based from personal and shared experiences, we will work to create movements and situations.  Playing, risking, pushing our limits.  Working with desires, secrets, fantasies, fears; incorporating them into now.  Let’s look at our culture.  Let’s look at our dance.  Let’s look at Detroit.  Let’s look at us.  Everything is possible.
